The
Powerful Hair Growing Ability Of Asia Sari Radix
In
a 2005 study from the Journal of Dermatological Science, scientists
examined the effects of 45 plant extracts that have been traditionally
used for treating hair loss in individuals in order to identify
potential hair growth stimulants. Asia sari radix is the root
of the Asiasarum plant; Saishin in Japanese. If looking to prevent
hair loss or thinning hair, Asia sari radix extract has shown
the most promise in stopping hair loss of all the plant extracts
examined.
The
examination of the Asia sari radix extract was performed by
using six-week-old female C57BL/6 and C3H mice. For 30 and 45
days, a topical application was applied to the backs of the
mice. This was done by rubbing a 1% solution of Asia sari radix
extract in a 40% ethanol solution onto the backs of the mice.
Using cultured murine vibrissae follicles, protein synthesis
was measured by the cysteine uptake assay. In addition, proliferation
of the immortalized human keratinocyte cell line, also called
HaCaT, and human dermal papilla (DP) cells were evaluated by
the MTT and thymidine assays; the proliferation cells increased
by 106.5% and 115%. Basically, this means that the Asia sari
radix extract increased the number of cells that are greatly
involved in producing hair. The mRNA levels of many growth factors
that have been implicated in promoting hair growth were measured
by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.
As a result, among the plant extracts that were tested, the
Asia sari radix extract provided the strongest hair growth stimulation
in the C57BL/6 and C3H mice experiments. The extract of this
plant greatly increased the protein synthesis in the vibrissae
follicle cultures and the proliferation of the HaCaT and the
human DP cells which were cultures in vitro. In addition to
cell increases, vascular endothelial growth factor expression
was also increased by the application of the Asia sari radix
extract. VEGF plays a very important role in the angiogenesis
process, which is the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing
vessels. VEGF expression is also typically higher in the anagen
growth phase and lower during the catagen (shedding) and telogen
(resting) growth phases. It has not been determined whether
VEGF directly affects hair growth or not, however; it has been
suggested that VEGF can affect hair by regulating the expression
of VEGF.
These results suggest that the Asia sari radix plant extract
has strong hair growth promoting potential. This conclusion
may be due to the fact that its regulatory effects on both cell
growth and growth factor gene expression. A possible explanation
for the observed results is that the extract increased the uptake
of the amino acid cysteine, which has been directly correlated
with hair follicle growth. Now, there is a product available
that contains a pure mixture of Asia sari radix called
Aradix. This is placed in pure mineral oil, because mineral
oil is the fastest way to permit the oil to penetrate the scalp,
thus promoting hair growth.
